Course Overview

The purpose of this course is to equip finance professionals wishing to enter the renewable energy industry with the knowledge, skill and competence to understand the nuances of accounting and finance of the industry.

For non-finance professionals already working in the industry, this course will provide an overview of the interaction between technical and financial aspects of the industry.

Course Objectives

The course will involve theory and interactive work. On completion, you will be understand:

  1. The macro picture of the Irish renewable energy industry (i.e. so participants will understand REFIT 1, 2 & 3, RESS, PSO etc...)
  2. Electricity markets and how they work (SEMO, day-ahead market, balancing market).
  3. the different phases of a project lifecycle (development, construction and operational) and the accounting implications;
  4. revenue recognition for a renewable energy wind or solar farm (PPAs, CPPAs, R-Factors etc);
  5. the nuances of operational assets and how contracts work in an accounting sense (e.g. turbine O&M agreements, rental agreements, PPAs)
  6. Different aspects of taxation for renewable energy farms (VAT, RCT, Capital allowances)
  7. Budgeting for renewable energy farms (budgeting cycle, indexation) and upstreaming (cash forecasting & optimisation)
  8. Financing structures in renewables and reporting to external lenders for the same (understanding key metrics and what they mean for the owners of renewable farms)

Course Content

This course will be run over 2 half days. The first day will be theoretical and interactive and the second day will involve a case-study to put into action the learnings from day 1.
